Learning Outcome 1

Learning Outcome 1

Learning Outcome 1: Demonstrate the ability to approach writing as a recursive process that requires substantial revision of drafts for content, organization, and clarity (global revision), as well as editing and proofreading (local revision).

Looking back on my first draft, it was very poor quality. Since it was the first draft I didn’t acquire all of the information I needed and it lacked organization. My thoughts were scattered throughout, so many ideas were present I was unsure of what to do with them all. With that being said this made it difficult for me to present a clear-cut thesis. The major things that needed revising was the organization of the essay, adding a proper introduction, body, conclusion paragraph as well as a thesis to the essay, and overall gathering more information. With more information I was able to uncover new ideas and topics that I later brought up as part of the argument. I found that expanding on the texts of others as well as adding quotes in really helped to bring out and support the whole point I was trying to make. Now taking a look at the final draft you can see significant differences. The thesis is stated properly in the introduction and the organization of the essay is correclty set up so it can flow nicely. Comparisons of the different text added different voices and point of views which allowed for the thesis/argument to be strongly supported. Before taking this class I never considered revision in the way I do now, I was unsure how to properly revise a paper. Revision is a tedious process that takes patience and most importantly thought. Revision is about more than just grammatical errors, it is about organization, clearness, and giving prime examples while being able to integrate different texts. With revision it is important to focus on the bigger ideas first then go off of those ideas by adding examples/evidence, and with those ideas be able to connect and explain them. Digging deeper into certain points is key to having a strong and successful essay. Throughout all the drafts my revising techniques have changed significantly for the better, I now feel confident with my revising process.
